Originally social networking happened in the workplace,

Being a worldwide part of the internet, it is now possible,
and easy, to build a network of contacts from many countries.
There are various types of social network websites. Some,
for example, have memberships interested in one specific
subject. Others, often referred to as "traditional" social
networking websites, usually have open memberships meaning
anyone can become a member, no matter what their hobbies,
beliefs, or views. However, once you have joined this
online community, you can begin to create your own network
of friends and eliminate members that do not share common
interests or goals.
There are literal hundreds of social network websites
available, and the range of topics they cover is vast.
The best way to find a social network website sharing your
interests is to perform a standard internet search.
As well as the larger better known social network websites,
you will find others of all sizes, countries, interests,
etc. When choosing a social network website to join, make
sure you read, agree to, and abide by the terms and rules
imposed by that website.
There are, of course, dangers associated with social
networking, as with all other aspects of the internet, which
include data theft and viruses, which are on the rise. The
rules of keeping yourself safe online apply every bit as
much to social network websites, as with anywhere else
online.
